Automatic Gearbox Replacement
In some cases, automatic gearbox replacement may be more cost-effective than a automatic gearbox repair. This is because some gearbox issues can be complex and time-consuming to fix, which can result in high labour costs.
Additionally, if the automatic gearbox is very old or damaged beyond repair, it may not be possible to recondition it effectively. In this case, it may be better to opt for a automatic gearbox replacement and invest in a new or refurbished automatic gearbox, which can offer improved performance, reliability, and a longer lifespan.
Common Automatic Gearbox Issues
If your vehicle is experiencing any of the below symptoms, it is highly recommended to have your vehicle diagnosed prior to it causing further damage internally.
- Unable to select gears / drive / reverse
- Jerking in gears / dropping out of gears
- Burning smell from gearbox / clutches
- Gearbox warning light illuminated on dash
- Whining / crunching / humming noises
- TCM / Mechatronic error codes

The time it takes to replace a manual gearbox can vary depending on the availability of parts, extent of damage and the specific model of the manual gearbox. In general, a standard manual gearbox replacement may take anywhere from a day all the way up to a week. Manual gearbox replacement generally has a faster turnaround time than manual gearbox repair.

Driving with a suspected gearbox problem is not recommended. Gearbox issues can worsen over time and may lead to sudden breakdowns or unsafe driving conditions. Continuing to drive the vehicle with a gearbox problem could cause further damage to the transmission system and other components, leading to more expensive repairs. It is best to have your car inspected by a qualified technician at ASR Gearbox Repairs as soon as possible.
Replacing a manual gearbox is necessary when severe damage or wear makes repair impractical or unsafe. Extensive damage or worn critical components may require a complete replacement. Older vehicles with high mileage or challenging parts availability might make replacement a more viable option. If repair costs approach or exceed replacement costs, a new or refurbished gearbox may be a better investment.
Replacing the manual gearbox instead of reconditioning the existing one offers a cost-effective and time-saving solution when reconditioning becomes uneconomical or too expensive. Replacing a manual gearbox ensures a reliable and performance-enhancing gearbox, often backed by warranty coverage which can extend your vehicle’s life for years to come.
